Angoulême, the capital of the Charente, is a medieval fortified city which has a buzzing cultural calendar. In January it hosts the International Comic Strip Festival (bande dessinée) and in September there is the classic and vintage car rally around the ramparts (Circuit des Remparts). In addition, Angoulême hosts rock and world music festivals throughout the year.
Angoulême is also good for shopping and dining out. Ryanair operates flights from the UK to Angoulême-Cognac Airport. Angoulême is also served by the TGV from Lille, Paris and Bordeaux.
Cognac is an historic town on the banks of the River Charente. It is famous for the Cognac Houses which distill the amber nectar Victor Hugo named 'Liquor of the Gods'. In July Cognac is the venue for an international festival of jazz, soul, reggae and blues (Cognac Blues Passion). There is also an international golf course.
Confolens is a beautiful medieval town on the River Vienne. Confolens hosts an annual International Festival of Folklore where musicians, dancers and folk singers from more than 20 countries, meet to perform in the streets and at open air venues.
Poitiers is a charming hilltop town with a magnificent cathedral, winding streets with half-timbered medieval houses, beautiful central gardens and a pleasant pedestrian precinct full of shops, restaurants and pavement cafes. Ryanair operates flights from the UK to Poitiers Airport. Poitiers is also served by the TGV from Lille, Paris and Bordeaux.
Market Towns There are over 30 market towns in the Charente region. Colourful local markets selling wonderful fresh produce can be found daily. In addition, there are several special monthly markets in the region. For example, Rouillac, which holds one of the biggest street markets in France, selling anything from goats cheese, seafood and lavender to farm machinery, chickens and horses.

Bordeaux is a large city at the centre of, arguably, the best vineyards in the world. The elegant 'old town', built in the eighteenth-century, has many chic shops, wine caves and numerous good restaurants featuring fresh seafood. There are over 50 flights per week from the UK to Bordeaux.
La Rochelle is a beautiful, ancient, maritime city with an old fortified port. It is a major sailing centre and its yacht marina is one of the largest in Europe. La Rochelle has a good selection of restaurants, speciality shops, museums and an aquarium, making it ideal for a day excursion from Souvigné. Ryanair and Jet2 operate flights from the UK to La Rochelle.
Limoges is renowned for its porcelain and enamelware. Fine examples of both crafts are on display in the city's unique museum collections. Limoges has many good and reasonably priced restaurants and a good selection of shops. It also has a very grand Gothic cathedral. FlyBe and Ryanair both have regular flights from the UK to Limoges
